In a period of history in which political correctness has forbidden artistic discussion about children and sexuality, Balthus introduces the debate maintaining that it appears in his art entirely from the perspective of a guileless curiosity, and an awe at the perfection of children. Povey has revered Balthus for the potent atmosphere which he creates, blending eroticism and a "smoky unselfconsciousness".

Edward Povey was painting strangely similarly to the English artist Stanley Spencer, using a personal imagery to convey philosophical ideas cloaked in very personal settings, long before his art professor – Selwyn Jones brought Spencer to his attention. The eccentric Spencer immediately became an important influence for one working in a tradition generally disapproved of in the late 20th century.
