In 1990 Povey began to experiment with various "languages of line" in an attempt to find a fluent and natural approach to the drawing of nudes. He finally chose to interpret visual horizons with a "poetry of line", varying in character as it seeks to convey the changing subtleties of the observed line.

On a research visit to Israel, Povey coincided with the Israeli Independence Day festivities, in which the cavorting and macabre performers brought to mind early childhood experiences of violence. This held for him a fear and also a profound fascination, which gave rise to a series of paintings, made during his time in the West Indies in the 1980s.
