In this period of his career, ideas were first written about, to shape the them – and then taken through an evolution of drawing towards a final design, to which he rigidly adhered in the painting. PERSONAL ENTANGLEMENT is a good example of this.

Characteristic of many of Povey's designs, the design for the painting EATER shows how an idea evolved from a very different source and finally concluded in precise lines, ready for transfer to the brown-washed canvas. He believes that the scale of the figures enormously affects their expression and impact, and his calculations are visible.

This is the original working drawing for the mural regarded as the most famous of the 25 murals that Povey painted throughout Wales in the 1970s. Publicly it is perhaps seen as the most popular mural ever painted in Wales.
